High blood pressure and gout: readings and flares in one app

Sam logs high blood pressure and gout in two programs: your readings in one, your flares in the other, each with its own doctor's report.

  • High Blood Pressure
  • Gout

Why the two often occur together

High blood pressure and gout often occur together.

  • 1.6 to 2.1x

as likely to develop gout with high blood pressure (pooled cohort studies, nine on high blood pressure)

  • 74%

of adults with gout had high blood pressure (US survey NHANES 2007 to 2008)

That describes co-occurrence and says nothing about your case.

How it works with high blood pressure and gout

  1. Log readings and flares separatelyReadings go into the blood pressure program, flares into the gout program. Both start once you confirm the diagnosis.
  2. Upload your lab resultsUric acid, eGFR and creatinine come from uploaded results, never from a sensor.
  3. Pick the period for each reportBoth reports to your GP, the gout report to rheumatology.

Common questions

Can gout cause high blood pressure?+

Studies describe the two occurring together often (figures above). Whether and in which direction one affects the other is not settled by that. It belongs in the conversation with your doctor.

Can I measure blood pressure with Sam?+

No. Sam does not measure anything itself, and an Apple Watch does not measure blood pressure. You enter your readings or bring values in from Apple Health.

Where does the uric acid value come from?+

From lab results you upload. The gout report shows the latest value and up to six values over time.

Which report do I bring to my GP?+

Either, or both. The blood pressure report shows your home readings and your intake, the gout report shows flares, affected joints and uric acid. Ask beforehand what the office wants to see.

What should I do if I have acute symptoms?+

If you have acute or serious symptoms, call your local emergency number. For non-urgent concerns, contact your doctor or local out-of-hours service. A diary replaces neither.

Readings and flares in one place

Start with the program that belongs to your next appointment.

Sam is a wellness companion, not a medical device. It does not diagnose or treat any condition and does not replace a doctor. The figures on this page describe how often conditions occur together and say nothing about your case. An Apple Watch does not measure blood pressure. If you have acute symptoms, call your local emergency number; for non-urgent concerns, contact your doctor.
