Living with Gout

Understand Your Gout to Manage It Better

Sam tracks the health signals that matter: your movement, sleep, alcohol intake, and stress, all against your personal baseline. Every month, your Apple Health trends are compiled into a PDF report, turning data into talking points with your rheumatologist. Sam doesn't automatically detect gout flares or measure uric acid levels - no wearable can do either.

Your data

The metrics that often come up in everyday life with Gout.

Your wearable already captures them. Sam reads them from Apple Health and shows you how they shift against your personal baseline.

How Sam accompanies you day to day with Gout

Sam reads the data your wearable already writes to Apple Health and compares it to your personal baseline - understandable, not a wall of numbers.

1

Spot Your Patterns

When gout flares hit, it can be hard to recall what triggered them. Was it a heavy meal? A night of drinking? Dehydration? Stress? Sam tracks your movement, alcohol intake, and stress levels all in one place. Over time, patterns emerge: you might notice you flare 2-3 days after alcohol, or that flares cluster after stressful weeks. That information is valuable in a conversation with your rheumatologist.

2

Bring Data to Your Doctor

Each month, Sam compiles your Apple Health data into a PDF report you can share with your doctor. Instead of relying on memory, you'll have a clear picture of your activity, sleep, stress, and other factors that affect your health between flares. Your rheumatologist can use this context to make better decisions about your urate-lowering therapy and flare management strategy.

3

Know Your Baseline

Between flares, you're often symptom-free, but knowing your normal movement, sleep, and stress is crucial for spotting changes. When something shifts (you're walking less, sleeping poorly, feeling stressed), you can take action: increase water intake, ease back on known triggers, or contact your doctor proactively to discuss how these changes fit your gout management strategy. Sam keeps your baseline visible so changes stand out immediately.

Inside the Medical Program

How the Gout Medical Program works.

A structured place to log what's happening, get medication reminders where relevant, and check in monthly - all building toward a report for your next appointment.

Medication Reminders

Set a reminder for your urate-lowering therapy, and Sam prompts you at the scheduled time. A custom dose stepper logs doses from 10 mg to 1000 mg in 10 mg increments, sized for medications like febuxostat.

Flare Log

When a flare hits, log which joint is swollen and warm, your worst pain at rest on a 0-10 scale, and how many joints are involved. Tag possible triggers and note whether you took acute medication, all in one quick entry.

Monthly Gout Impact Check-In

Once a month, Sam asks five short questions about how gout has affected you recently. The check-in is built on the PROMIS framework used in patient-reported outcome research, with scores ranging from 5 to 30.

Lab Values in Context

Upload your blood-test results and Sam shows your serum urate level, with automatic unit conversion, against the standard treat-to-target line used in gout care, plus eGFR and creatinine from the same labs. These figures come from the documents you upload, never from a sensor, and live alongside the rest of your records in the Health Vault.

Every Medical Program builds toward your monthly doctor-report PDF, alongside your measured context (sleep, activity, and more where relevant).

Understand, don't guess.

Sam translates your numbers into clear answers and a report you can take with you.

Ask Sam about your data

Instead of interpreting charts, you ask questions - Sam answers from your own numbers. For example:

How's my movement been this week?
Your average daily steps this week were 6,400, about 1,800 below your three-month baseline.
Is that normal for it to drop like...

A report for your next doctor's appointment

The monthly PDF report sums up your weeks objectively - for appointments, applications, or simply your own record.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Sam detect or warn me before a gout flare?+

No. No wearable can detect a gout flare or predict when one will happen. Flares start with acute joint inflammation that happens inside your body. What Sam can do is help you track patterns in your lifestyle (alcohol, diet, hydration, stress) so you recognize your personal triggers and are better prepared for conversations with your doctor.

I have sudden severe joint pain, swelling, and redness. Is it gout?+

Sudden hot, swollen, red joints, especially if accompanied by fever, can indicate several conditions, including gout, but also infection (septic arthritis). Do not assume it's gout without a doctor's assessment. Seek urgent care to rule out infection, especially if this is your first flare or if you have a fever. A rheumatologist or your GP can confirm the diagnosis.

Can wearables measure uric acid levels?+

No wearable, including Sam's, can measure uric acid directly - that still requires a blood test. What Sam can do is read your serum urate value from an uploaded lab report and show it against the standard treat-to-target line, alongside eGFR and creatinine from the same labs, all stored in your Health Vault.

How do I log a gout flare in Sam?+

No, flares aren't auto-detected - you log them yourself. But the log is structured: which joint is affected, whether it's warm, your worst pain at rest (0-10), how many joints are involved, plus trigger tags and whether you took acute medication. Sam does not calculate a diagnosis from these entries.

What's the difference between daily data and my monthly report?+

Sam shows you your daily Apple Health data (steps, sleep, stress, heart rate) so you can spot trends week to week. Your monthly PDF report compiles all of that into one summary you can download and share with your doctor. You don't need to manually export or screenshot anything; the report is generated automatically and ready to print or email to your healthcare team.

I'm on allopurinol but keep having flares. What should I do?+

If your flares aren't improving despite urate-lowering therapy, that's a conversation for your rheumatologist. Don't adjust your medication on your own. Your doctor may order blood uric acid tests to see if your dose is optimal, or explore other factors (diet, adherence, medication interactions) or additional therapies. Bring your Sam data and any flare notes you've kept; context helps your doctor make the best decision for your care.
