Help with high blood pressure without taking over
You help a parent with high blood pressure by making home measuring easy and preparing the doctor visit. Sam does not measure blood pressure; that takes an upper-arm cuff.
How can you help with measuring at home?
The readings belong to your parent. You just make it easier.
- Choose a validated upper-arm cuffIndependent lists such as STRIDE BP name validated devices. A practice or pharmacy can let your parent practise.
- Measure seated and calmSit upright, arm relaxed at heart height, rest at least 5 minutes first, and do not talk while measuring.
- Measure at the same timeA common pattern is two readings about 1 minute apart, morning and evening. The practice says how often.
- Write the readings downA notebook is enough. Measuring daily for about a week before a check-up is advisable.
Good to know
- Often no symptomsHigh blood pressure is often not felt. Only measuring shows it.
- The thresholdsPractice from 140/90, home from 135/85 mmHg. The doctor decides.
- The watch does not measureAn Apple Watch does not measure blood pressure. Use an upper-arm cuff.
- A very high readingAbove 180/110, or as advised: rest 30 minutes, re-measure. With symptoms: call emergency services.
What can you say to your parent?
You could say Would you like us to pick an upper-arm cuff together?
You offer help without taking over.
You could say Shall we write the readings down together before the appointment?
That gives you both something concrete for the doctor.
You could say How are things going with the tablets? Do you need anything from me?
An open question, without checking up.
Sam for your parent
Readings, medication and the visit in one place
Your parent keeps the readings in Sam. Measuring still happens with the upper-arm cuff, and the visit gets a report instead of a scrap of paper.
- Enter every readingYour parent types in the top and bottom number, pulse and arm. A short guide to measuring correctly sits inside the app.
- Apple Health feeds inIf the cuff sends its readings to Apple Health, Sam picks them up. Neither Sam nor the watch measures blood pressure.
- Note what was takenYour parent enters the doctor's medication plan, sets reminders and ticks off each dose. Only the doctor changes doses.
- A report for the practiceA PDF with the 7-day average, morning and evening values, number of readings and doses taken. Your parent picks the period.

What adult children often ask
EmergencyWhen should I get help right away?+
This is general safety information, not a diagnosis, and it does not tell you whether a health condition is present.
- Shortness of breath
- Severe chest tightness or chest pain
- Confusion
- Paralysis
- Vision or speech problems
- A seizure or loss of consciousness
If you see any of these signs, call your local emergency number (112 in the EU, 999 in the UK, 911 in the US) right away. If it is urgent but not life-threatening, your doctor's out-of-hours service helps outside practice hours. Do not use this list to decide on your own whether something is wrong.
Can my mother's smartwatch measure blood pressure?+
No. An Apple Watch does not measure blood pressure. The American Heart Association says cuffless devices are not yet accurate enough to guide diagnosis or treatment.
My mother got a hypertension notification on her watch. Now what?+
The notification is not a reading and not a diagnosis. Apple says it is not meant for people with diagnosed high blood pressure. Talk to the practice and measure with an upper-arm cuff.
My father does not take it seriously. What can I do?+
High blood pressure is often not felt, so everything seems fine. Start with curiosity and offer to measure together before the appointment. The decision stays with him.
When is a reading too high?+
The European guideline gives 140/90 mmHg at the practice and 135/85 at home as the threshold. Whether high blood pressure is present, and what your parent needs, is for the doctor to decide. For a very high reading without symptoms (above 180/110 mmHg, or as the doctor named it): rest 30 minutes, measure again, and if it stays high call the practice or the out-of-hours doctor service.
Does Sam replace the cuff or the doctor?+
No. Sam does not measure blood pressure and diagnoses nothing. Your parent enters readings and medication, and a report for the appointment comes out of it.

Sam pulls readings, medication and symptoms together for the practice.
Sam is a wellness companion and not a medical device. Sam does not diagnose or treat anything and does not replace a doctor. An Apple Watch does not measure blood pressure, and neither does Sam. For acute symptoms call your local emergency number (112 in the EU, 999 in the UK, 911 in the US).
