You can set up an Apple Watch for your parents. If they have an iPhone, you pair the watch with it, ideally together at the kitchen table. If they have none, Apple Watch For Your Kids (formerly Family Setup) lets you manage the watch from your own iPhone. After that you set up the emergency call and, if they want it, fall detection. If your parents want to keep track of how they feel, Sam takes sleep, resting heart rate and steps from Apple Health, and they decide what to share with you.

Do your parents have an iPhone?

That is the first question, because the route depends on it. If your mother or father has an iPhone, the watch pairs with that iPhone. If nobody has one, Apple offers Apple Watch For Your Kids (formerly Family Setup), where you manage the watch through your own iPhone.

Which watch fits is a separate question. The smartwatch finder for seniors takes five short questions. It names example devices, not recommendations, and it is not part of Sam.

Talk to your parents first. A watch on the wrist is personal, and they should want it. How to start the conversation is on the page talking to your parents about their health.

How do you pair the watch with your parents' iPhone?

According to Apple's guide, you need an iPhone and an Apple Watch that work together, and an iPhone with current software. Bluetooth is on, and the iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi or cellular. Then:

  1. Switch the watch on by holding the side button until the Apple logo appears.
  2. Hold the iPhone near the watch and tap Continue.
  3. Choose Set Up for Myself. From your parents' point of view, that is the right choice.
  4. Point the iPhone camera at the watch until it appears in the viewfinder and pairing starts.

During setup, your parents enter personal details such as date of birth and height, which are used for fitness and health. Enter the age correctly. It decides about features that matter later. If the watch has cellular, you can activate it during setup or later in the Apple Watch app. Apple says cellular is not available in every country or region.

What if your parents have no iPhone?

Then Apple Watch For Your Kids helps. According to Apple's support page, you need:

  • an Apple Watch with cellular, Series 4 or later or an SE,
  • an iPhone on which you set up the watch,
  • a family group with you as organiser and a separate Apple ID for your parent.

The watch can then make calls, send messages and share location. Heart rate, heart rate variability and Fall Detection are available for adults. Apple lists medications, respiratory rate, irregular rhythm notifications, ECG, sleep, wrist temperature, blood oxygen and walking steadiness as not available.

This has consequences. Sam runs on the iPhone and reads health data from Apple Health, so your mother or father needs an iPhone of their own for it. Sleep that the watch does not record in this mode cannot be shown in Sam either.

Which emergency settings matter?

Set up these three things together with your parents:

  • Emergency contacts and medical details: in the Health app, open the profile picture and then the medical details, which Apple calls Medical ID, and add emergency contacts. They get a text with the location after an emergency call.
  • Emergency call on the watch: hold the side button until the slider appears. According to Apple, if you keep holding, it starts the call automatically after a countdown. If you let go before that, it stops. If it starts by accident, your mother should not hang up but tell the responder she does not need help.
  • Fall Detection: the Apple Watch has a feature called Fall Detection. Apple switches it on when an age of 55 or older is entered, and it is meant for people aged 18 and over. After a hard fall, the watch taps the wrist and shows an alert. If the person stays still for about a minute, a countdown starts, then the watch calls emergency services and texts the emergency contacts with the location.

Apple names the limits itself: the watch cannot detect all falls, may take high-impact activities for falls, and needs satellite, cellular or Wi-Fi calling to place the call. More: Apple Watch fall and crash detection.

What does the watch not measure?

An Apple Watch does not measure blood pressure. After a possible hypertension notification, Apple asks you to measure for seven days with a third-party cuff. The notification about possible hypertension is a hint drawn from heart sensor data and, according to Apple, is not meant to diagnose hypertension. More: can a smartwatch measure blood pressure?.

For blood sugar the position is clear. The US FDA warns against smartwatches and rings that claim to measure blood glucose without piercing the skin. Wrong values can be dangerous.

The watch provides data that can fit an appointment, such as resting heart rate, sleep and steps. It does not replace an examination.

How do your parents share data with you?

If your parents want to, they can do it with Care Circle in Sam. The person using Sam chooses what to share: read-only, per person and revocable at any time. You need Sam yourself, and you get no notifications about the data. Care Circle does not share the doctor report PDF. How it works is described on the page sharing with family in Sam.

More on helping from a distance: supporting parents from a distance. Which app suits your parents is covered on the page choosing a health app for your parents.

See your parents' Apple Watch data in Sam and share it with their permission

Your parents keep the watch's sleep, resting heart rate and steps in one record and decide what you see of it.

  • Instead of screenshots: Sam reads sleep, resting heart rate and steps from Apple Health and shows them as a trend. Your parents type nothing, and they can note how they feel beside it.
  • Instead of phone calls to ask: with your parents' permission, you see in Care Circle the areas they share, read-only and set up for each person separately.

Sam does not measure anything itself, and Care Circle is not an alarm. Your parents can end sharing at any time. More on sharing in Sam.

Try Sam Health

Sam is a wellness companion, not a medical device. The app does not diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease or health condition. Always consult qualified professionals for medical decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I set up an Apple Watch for my parents?+

Yes. If your parents have an iPhone, you pair the watch with their iPhone, ideally together. If they have none, Apple Watch For Your Kids (formerly Family Setup) lets you manage the watch from your own iPhone. It needs a family group, an Apple ID for your parent and a watch with cellular.

Do my parents need an iPhone for an Apple Watch?+

Normally yes, because the watch pairs with an iPhone. Without one there is Apple Watch For Your Kids (formerly Family Setup). Apple says some features are not available there, including ECG, irregular heart rhythm notifications, sleep, blood oxygen, medications and respiratory rate.

Is fall detection switched on by default?+

According to Apple, it turns on automatically when an age of 55 or older is entered during setup or in the Health app. Check that the age is right. Apple says the watch cannot detect all falls and needs a connection to place the emergency call.

How does the emergency call on Apple Watch work?+

You hold the side button until the Emergency Call slider appears. Drag it to call right away, or keep holding and the watch dials after a countdown. Afterwards your emergency contacts get a text with your location.

Can Apple Watch measure blood pressure or blood sugar?+

Not reliably. An Apple Watch does not measure blood pressure. After a possible hypertension notification, Apple asks you to measure with a third-party cuff. The notification is not a measurement. The US FDA warns against smartwatches that claim to measure blood glucose without piercing the skin.

How do I see my parents' data as their son or daughter?+

Only if they share it with you. In Sam, the person using Sam chooses what to share: read-only, per person and revocable at any time. You need Sam yourself, and you do not get notifications about the data.

Which Apple Watch suits my parents?+

That depends on their phone, eyesight and habits. The smartwatch finder asks five short questions and names example devices. It is a conversation starter for you both, not a buying recommendation.
