Migraine keeps coming on the weekend? Record the day and start time of each attack, and let the pattern show up over the weeks.

Weekend migraine: why attacks may cluster on Saturdays and Sundays, what to log for each one, and how to take the pattern to your doctor.

Your migraine keeps coming at the weekend, sometimes only on Sunday, often in the morning. The moment matters, so you record the day and the start time, on paper or in the migraine diary in Sam. In Sam, sleep and heart rate variability from Apple Health sit a few taps from the entry. Sam shows when your attacks come, not why. Your doctor or specialist interprets the why.

Why a weekend pattern looks striking

You are not alone. Many people with migraine report attacks at the weekend. Research describes an effect called let-down: a drop in perceived stress can come with a higher chance of an attack (Lipton and colleagues, Neurology 2014). MedlinePlus lists migraine on the weekend after a stressful week of work as one predictable timing. Changes in sleep are often named too. Poor sleep can raise the likelihood, frequency or severity of attacks, says the American Migraine Foundation.

There are other ideas, such as caffeine withdrawal, in an older paper by Couturier and colleagues (Cephalalgia 1992). These are hypotheses, not proven causes. The useful difference is this: that your attacks come at the weekend is a pattern. Why they come is not written in your notes. Only your treatment team can judge that. So Sam holds the pattern, not the cause.

What to record for each attack: the day and the start time

For a pattern you need two reliable facts: the day of the week and the time the attack began. Write them on the attack day, not on Monday for the whole week. Otherwise you cannot tell later whether an empty day means free or forgotten. See migraine triggers: sleep, stress and tracking for what else often matters.

The rest is familiar diary material: strength, duration, accompanying symptoms, aura yes or no, and a short note. With these fields you can later see whether attacks pile up on certain weekdays and whether they start in the morning. That is not self-diagnosis. It is a basis for the conversation.

What Apple Health adds next to your entry

If an attack starts today, Sam shows values from Apple Health beside the entry: prior night's sleep and heart rate variability, when a value exists. Next to the clock time you see how the night looked, short, long or shifted. You would not write such details down by hand. The values are context, not a finding. Sam does not interpret them. What they mean for you is something you discuss with your doctor. Symptoms outside attacks, such as mild headache without an attack, go in the symptom diary.

How the doctor report shows the weekend pattern

In Sam the attack diary belongs to a program for migraine. A program here means a diary of its own with a doctor report and a monthly questionnaire, not a treatment plan. The program starts after you confirm that a doctor has diagnosed migraine. The guide Migraine diagnosis: what now explains the idea.

The doctor report as a PDF sums up your entries for a period you choose. It counts your migraine days and shows which days they fell on. The practice sees whether attacks cluster at the weekend instead of relying on memory. Once a month the MIDAS questionnaire appears. It asks on how many days migraine limited you in the last three months. You can also work out the MIDAS migraine score yourself and bring the result.

When a headache turns urgent

A weekend pattern is not danger by itself. Some signs are, and they have nothing to do with the day of the week. A headache that comes on suddenly, in seconds to minutes, can be the worst of your life. In that case call your local emergency number (112 in the EU, 999 in the UK, 911 in the US). Call too for first-time vision, speech or weakness symptoms. That includes loss of vision, slurred speech, or weakness in an arm or leg. This guidance from the NHS also applies if you know migraine with aura. You do not have to decide alone whether it is an aura or something else. When in doubt, call. Sam does not recognise such signs and cannot place them.

Log the weekend pattern in Sam and take the report along

You arrive with a course that shows the days your attacks fell on, instead of telling the story week by week from memory.

  • Instead of loose notes: you enter the start time, strength, duration, aura and symptoms in a few seconds, with sleep and heart rate variability from Apple Health beside today's entries.
  • Instead of memory: the doctor report as a PDF counts your migraine days for the period you choose and shows which days they fell on.
  • Instead of a form in the waiting room: the MIDAS check-in comes once a month, and the course sits in the report.

The program for migraine starts after you confirm a doctor has diagnosed migraine. Sam does not predict, detect or diagnose an attack.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I get migraine every weekend?+

A weekend pattern is noticeable, but it is not a proven cause by itself. Research offers ideas, such as the let-down effect after stress eases or a change in sleep. Why it happens for you is something your doctor or specialist interprets. Record the day and the start time so the pattern becomes visible.

Can weekend migraine come from stress easing off?+

Research describes an effect called let-down: a drop in perceived stress can come with a higher chance of an attack. That is a hypothesis from studies, not an explanation of your own case. Talk to your care team about what you record.

What should I log if migraine only comes on Sunday?+

Log the day and the time the attack starts, plus strength, duration, any aura and the symptoms around it. After several weeks, the record shows whether attacks cluster on certain days. What that means for you is a topic for your doctor.

Can an app predict when the next migraine is coming?+

No. Sam does not predict, detect or diagnose an attack. You enter each attack yourself. Your care team interprets what your records show.

Is weekend migraine dangerous?+

A weekend pattern on its own is not a reason for concern. A headache that builds suddenly into the worst of your life is, and so are first-time vision, speech or weakness symptoms. In those cases call your local emergency number, even if you know migraine.
