Make everyday life easier for a parent with reflux

If your parent has reflux, small daily changes and a heartburn diary for the doctor visit help. You never classify chest pain as reflux yourself, a doctor does that.

What can I do?

What can help day to day with reflux?

These are general tips. What suits your parent is for the doctor to say.

  1. Smaller mealsSeveral small ones rather than a few large ones.
  2. Time before lying downLeave three to four hours between the last meal and sleep.
  3. Upper body higher at nightSleeping with the upper body raised can ease symptoms.

What you can say

  • You could say
Shall we write down for a few weeks when the heartburn comes?

A diary turns a feeling into a record.

  • You could say
If heartburn disturbs your sleep, please tell your doctor.

You suggest what counts for the talk.

  • You could say
With pressure in the chest I do not wait. We call the emergency number.

A clear line, without interpreting anything.

How do you prepare the doctor visit?

  • Bring the diaryWhen heartburn came and what came before.
  • List medicationIncluding over-the-counter remedies for heartburn.
  • Mention anything unusualTrouble swallowing, weight loss or repeated vomiting: say so right away.

Sam for your parent

A heartburn diary instead of guesses

Your parent keeps heartburn on record in Sam, with what came before. It becomes a report the doctor can look at.

  • Heartburn in a few tapsTime, type of symptoms, strength and whether it woke them. What they ate or drank before is optional.
  • Sleep and weight alongsideIf your parent has sleep and weight in Apple Health, Sam shows them next to the heartburn without claiming a link.
  • Report for the doctorThe PDF shows heartburn days, nights it woke them, medication and whether it helped, plus their own notes as counts.
  • Share what they chooseWith Care Circle your parent shares the history of this program. You see it read-only, and you both need Sam.
Example

Counts instead of estimates at the visit

  • Instead ofguessing at the visit how often it was at night

In SamA count of the nights heartburn woke your parent.

  • Instead ofmemories of what was taken and whether it helped

In SamA note of what your parent took and whether it helped.

  • Instead ofasking whether there was heartburn today

In SamYour parent shares only what they like through Care Circle.

Your parent starts the program (its own diary and doctor report) by confirming that a doctor has diagnosed reflux; Sam gives no diet or dosing tips, and chest pain always needs a doctor to assess it.

Questions adult children ask

EmergencyWhen should I get help right away?+

This is general safety information, not a diagnosis, and it does not tell you whether a condition is present.

  • Pressure, heaviness or tightness in the chest
  • Pain spreading to the arm, jaw or back
  • Chest pain with cold sweat, nausea or breathlessness
  • Vomiting blood or material that looks like coffee grounds
  • Black, sticky stool or blood in the stool

In these cases call your local emergency number (112 in the EU, 999 in the UK, 911 in the US) right away. Trouble swallowing or unintended weight loss needs a doctor's appointment soon; if it cannot wait, call your local out-of-hours service. Do not use this list to decide on your own whether something is wrong.

Is reflux dangerous?+

Reflux itself can be treated by a doctor. What matters is not to wave away chest pain as reflux too quickly, because it can come from the heart.

When should my parent see a doctor?+

When heartburn keeps coming back or remedies from the pharmacy do not help. With trouble swallowing, unintended weight loss or repeated vomiting, soon.

Can an app tell heartburn from a heart attack?+

No. Sam makes no diagnoses and cannot do that. For new or severe chest pain get help right away (see the first question).

Should I interfere with what my parent eats?+

Ask what could change and offer to cook together. What triggers symptoms differs from person to person, and the diary shows that best.

Can I see what my parent enters in Sam?+

Only if your parent adds you in Care Circle and shares areas with you. You see them read-only, you both need Sam, there are no alerts about their data, and your parent can end the sharing at any time.

Keep heartburn on record for the visit

A diary made of a few taps gives the doctor more than a guess.

Sam is a wellness companion, not a medical device. Sam does not diagnose or treat anything, does not replace a doctor and cannot tell reflux from a heart problem. For acute symptoms call your local emergency number (112 in the EU, 999 in the UK, 911 in the US).
