Help your parent through pollen season
If your parent has hay fever, you help most through small daily steps and a doctor visit that shows the whole season. Breathlessness or swelling, however, is an emergency.
What helps day to day with hay fever?
- Windows shut in pollen seasonOn days with a lot of pollen, keep windows and doors shut as much as possible.
- Shower after being outsideShowering and changing clothes washes pollen off.
- Note down symptomsOne tap a day is enough: good, mild or bad.
What you can say
You could say How are you coping with the pollen season?
An open question instead of advice.
You could say Shall we write down when it is worst? Then you can show it to the doctor.
You offer a small task.
You could say If the pharmacy remedies are not enough, ask your doctor. I am happy to come along.
You suggest the visit and decide nothing.
How do you prepare the doctor visit?
- Capture the seasonWhen it was bad, when it was better.
- Note what was triedWhat your parent has already tried.
- Mention breathing problemsCough, wheezing or shortness of breath belong in the talk.
Sam for your parent
The whole season as a PDF for the doctor
Your parent notes in Sam how each day was. At the visit they take the whole season along as a report.
- One tap a dayGood, mild or bad: one tap is enough. If your parent likes, they add nose, eyes, sleep and what they took.
- Pollen for each dayWith approximate location shared, Sam keeps grass, tree and weed pollen and air quality next to each day, where available.
- Report for the visitThe PDF shows symptom days, nights with disturbed sleep, what was taken and, where pollen data exists, symptom days on high-pollen days.
- Share what they chooseWith Care Circle your parent shares the history of this program. You see it read-only, and you both need Sam.

A season you can back up
Instead ofguessing the symptoms from memory at the visit
In SamDays noted with one tap, the season as a history.
Instead ofpollen counts in one app and notes in a calendar
In SamPollen and air values sit, where available, next to the symptom days in one history.
Instead ofphoning to ask how they are today
In SamYour parent shares what they like, and you only read.
Your parent starts the program (its own diary and doctor report) by confirming that a doctor has diagnosed hay fever; which allergen is involved is for a doctor to find out with a test.
Questions adult children ask
EmergencyWhen should I get help right away?+
This is general safety information, not a diagnosis, and it does not tell you whether a condition is present.
- Sudden breathlessness, wheezing or hoarseness
- Swelling of the tongue, lips, face or throat
- Tightness in the throat or trouble swallowing
- Dizziness, fainting, pale or cold skin
- Several symptoms at once, for example skin, stomach and breathing
In these cases call your local emergency number (112 in the EU, 999 in the UK, 911 in the US) right away and do not wait. For other concerns, call your doctor or local out-of-hours service. Do not use this list to decide on your own whether something is wrong.
Is hay fever dangerous?+
It mostly affects daily life. Breathlessness or swelling of the face, tongue or throat is an emergency though (see the first question).
When should my parent see a doctor?+
When symptoms get worse or remedies from the pharmacy do not help. Cough or wheezing also belong in the practice.
Can asthma come on top of hay fever?+
For some people asthma-like symptoms are added. That is why cough, wheezing and shortness of breath count at the doctor visit.
What helps day to day?+
Keep windows shut on pollen days and shower after being outside. Which remedies fit is for the doctor or pharmacy to say.
Can I see what my parent enters in Sam?+
Only if your parent adds you in Care Circle and shares areas with you. You see them read-only, you both need Sam, there are no alerts about their data, and your parent can end the sharing at any time.

Keep the season on record for the visit
One tap a day builds a record the doctor can look at.
Sam is a wellness companion, not a medical device. Sam does not diagnose or treat anything, does not measure pollen or allergens and does not replace a doctor. For acute symptoms call your local emergency number (112 in the EU, 999 in the UK, 911 in the US).
